THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF POWER TOOLS

THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF POWER TOOLS

Power tools play a major role in a wide range of industrial and residential settings. Concrete tools, construction equipment, and heavy duty construction machines are commonplace on sites, in workplaces, and in homes, across the country, but most of us do not stop to think about the history of these handy devices.

It isn’t surprising that things were a lot more difficult before electricity came along. The one thing all modern power tools have in common is their need for a source of electricity. What is surprising is that the very first power tools date back to the Ancient Egyptians, well before electricity was available as a power source for construction machines. The lathe invented by the Ancient Egyptians depended on hand power to operate, but it was still the most advanced tool of the time.

Man has relied on all kinds of makeshift tools since the beginning of time. The main difference between the earliest tools and those that began to appear at the end of the 19th century was the source of energy. Even the most advanced tools were highly labour-intensive. Something as simple and necessary as cutting down trees depended on the strength of two people with a cross cut saw or one individual and an axe. There was no such thing as a quick project and any building job was far from easy.

The First Electric Power Tool

A German engineering company called C&E Fein invented the first modern power tool in 1895. They created a drill that operated by electric motor that weighed in at 7.48 kilograms. The drill was heavy and slow in comparison to the construction equipment used today. Still, it was more than twenty years before Black & Decker came up with a better design. This was the start of the power tool revolution which continues to influence the powerful and diverse tools used today.

Black & Decker had set the wheels of industry in motion, and it wasn't long before other brands followed in their footsteps. Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, and Milwaukee; all pioneers of the trade, and all still producing high quality tools to this day.

Some of the other top brands in concrete tools and construction machines include:

  • Mikasa
  • Prime Exposure
  • Signma
  • MiteQ
  • Staedtler
  • Alpha
  • Belle Group
  • Boss
  • Diarex
  • Edma

The Addition of Cordless Power Tools

Black & Decker is also credited with introducing the first cordless power tool in 1961. These tools have greatly improved over time, offering a lot more versatility. In hard to reach spots, where access to electricity is scarce, cordless tools make it possible to stay on the job.

Today, there are quality power tools designed to handle a broad range of jobs, including tools which are ideally suited for personal and for professional use.
